Introduction to The Summer Book

Music Box Films has acquired the North American rights to The Summer Book, a film starring Glenn Close, after its world premiere at the 2024 BFI London Film Festival. The movie is an adaptation of Tove Jansson’s novel of the same name, which explores themes of grief and the bond between a young girl and her grandmother.

The Storyline

The film tells the story of Sophia, a 9-year-old girl played by Emily Matthews, and her grandmother, as they spend time in their family’s summer house in the Gulf of Finland. The story takes a dramatic turn as storms gather, and the family must come to terms with their emotions. The cast also includes Anders Danielsen Lie, who plays Sophia’s father.

Release Details

The Summer Book is set to open in theaters on September 19th at the Angelika Film Center in New York. Music Box Films is partnering with Kanopy, a US library and educational streaming platform, to make the film available to subscribers and educators after its theatrical run. This collaboration marks a new approach to film distribution, prioritizing access, curation, and cultural value.

Production and Distribution

The Summer Book was produced by a team of talented individuals, including Kath Mattock, Kevin Loader, Duncan Montgomery, Aleksi Bardy, Charlie McDowell, and Alex Orlovsky. The executive producers include Jack Selby, Rick Covert, Arthur Farache, Victoria Castelli, and Lily Collins. The transaction was negotiated by Brian Andreotti, Courtney Kyer, and CAA Media Finance.

A New Approach to Film Distribution

Kanopy’s partnership with Music Box Films redefines the traditional model of film distribution. By prioritizing access and cultural value, Kanopy provides a unique platform for independent films like The Summer Book to reach a wider audience. As Jason Tyrrell, EVP of Content at OverDrive, Kanopy’s parent company, noted, "At a time when many independent films have difficulty finding a home on mainstream platforms, Kanopy redefines what distribution can look like."
