Introduction to Doctor Odyssey
The medical drama series "Doctor Odyssey" has been canceled by ABC after a single season. As the only scripted series on the network without a renewal or cancellation announcement since April, the show’s fate had been uncertain.
The Show’s Concept
"Doctor Odyssey" followed the story of Dr. Max Bankman, played by Joshua Jackson, a doctor on a luxury cruise ship called Odyssey. The show explored complex medical emergencies and featured a talented cast, including Phillipa Soo as Avery Morgan, a nurse practitioner, Sean Teale as Tristan Silva, a nurse, and Don Johnson as Robert Massey, the ship captain.
Cast and Characters
The recurring cast included Jacqueline Toboni as engineer Rosie, Marcus Emanuel Mitchell as first officer Spencer Monroe, Rick Cosnett as housekeeping head Corey, and Laura Harrier as chef Vivian. The show also featured prominent guest stars, such as Rachel Dratch, Shania Twain, Kelsea Ballerini, and Angela Bassett.
Behind the Scenes
"Doctor Odyssey" was produced by 20th Television in collaboration with Ryan Murphy Television. Ryan Murphy, Jon Robin Baitz, and Joe Baken wrote the series and served as executive producers.
Controversy and Cancellation
The cancellation comes after three former crew members filed a lawsuit against Disney and 20th Television on May 30, alleging "unchecked sexual harassment" on set. The lawsuit accused assistant props master Tyler Patton of making sexual jokes, comments, and gestures, creating a hostile work environment. The contracts of the cast members will expire on Monday, and ABC has decided not to renew the series for another season.
