Introduction to the Met Gala

The Metropolitan Museum of Art is preparing for its annual Met Gala, an event synonymous with extravagant fashion and celebrity spectacle. This year’s "Fashion is Art" dress code promises to inspire some of the most extravagant clothing yet as guests ascend the iconic carpeted steps on May 4th.

The Theme and Exhibition

The theme is based directly on the Costume Institute’s spring exhibition "Costume Art", in which around 200 art objects are shown alongside 200 items of clothing and illustrate the enduring connection between fashion and art over the centuries. The exhibition will debut in the new Condé Nast Galleries, a nearly 12,000-square-foot space created from the museum’s former retail store and located adjacent to the Great Hall.

Hosts and Sponsors

This year’s star-studded event will be co-hosted by notable figures. A broader “host committee” includes designer Anthony Vaccarello and filmmaker Zoë Kravitz, as well as other names. However, the most discussed names related to the event are the main sponsors. A February press release from the Met said: “The exhibition and fundraiser are made possible by the sponsors.”

Controversy and Protests

Their involvement sparked protests. An activist group posted an Instagram video showing members hacking subway display cases to display anti-billionaire messages against their participation. Not everyone is enthusiastic about the fascination of the gala. Some have pushed for an affordability platform and will not attend.

The Exhibition’s Unique Features

Curator Andrew Bolton also added an important element of body positivity to the exhibition. Although Art History focuses on classical body shapes, Costume Art will include sections dedicated to often overlooked body types such as the corpulent and disabled bodies. To reflect these diverse shapes, 25 new mannequins were created. Nine real people were digitally scanned for their creation. These mannequins will also feature mirror-like polished steel surfaces, allowing the viewer to see themselves in the mirror.

The Met Gala’s History and Exclusivity

The Met Gala’s origins date back to 1948, when a Manhattan society midnight dinner was held at various locations. It took many years to develop into the global, star-studded event it is today. The visit remains extremely exclusive; only the rich, famous or powerful receive an invitation. Single tickets are expensive and a table of 10 starts at a high price, with about 400 guests expected.

The Event Experience

After walking the red carpet, guests enter the museum, where their phone cameras are covered in stickers. They will be greeted by an elaborate floral arrangement and often an orchestra. After a reception line, attendees head for cocktails or the exhibition before dinner. While most guests arrive for the main course, some are known to only show up for dessert, and occasionally a few leave before dinner even begins, presumably for an even more exclusive afterparty.
