Introduction to a Unique Film Experience
Finnish filmmaker Juho Kuosmanen has created a unique trilogy of silent films, which have gained attention worldwide. The trilogy, sold by Totem Films, has been acquired by several key distributors in various regions, including Le Pacte in France, September Film in Benelux, Folkets Bio in Sweden, At Entertainment in Japan, Xenix in Switzerland, and Film Stop in the Baltics.
Film Premiere and Festivals
The silent trilogy premiered at the Il Cinema Ritrovato Festival in Bologna in June and was later screened at the Karlovy International Film Festival in July as part of the Horizonts program. This exposure has helped generate interest in the film, which is a compilation of Kuosmanen’s previous works.
The Trilogy’s Composition
The trilogy is a mash-up of Kuosmanen’s 2012 short film "Romu-Matilla and a Beautiful Woman," 2017’s "The Moon Shells," and 2023’s "A Planet Far Away." The narrative weaves together a diverse group of characters, including moonshiners and a pig, whose endeavors ultimately lead to failure. What makes this film stand out is its presentation with live sounds, music, and episodes, aiming to recreate the performance tradition of silent films.
Music and Sound Effects
The music for the silent trilogy is performed by Ykspihlajan Kino-Koresteri, with foley sound effects by Heikki Kossi and Pietu Korhonen. This combination of live music and meticulously crafted sound effects enhances the viewing experience, immersing the audience in the world of the film.
Production and Distribution
The silent trilogy is produced by Kuosmanen’s regular partner, Aamu Film Company, in collaboration with OTSO Film and Totem Films. Totem Films’ slate also includes other notable projects, such as Carolina Pavone’s "Almost at Home" and Hind Meddeb’s documentary "Sudan, Remember Us," both of which premiered at the Venice and Sofia film festivals, respectively. Additionally, Sofia Bohnotwicz’s "Measures for a Funeral" is set for a world premiere in Toronto, showcasing the diverse range of films Totem Films is involved with.
