Introduction to Jesus Christ Superstar
The classic Broadway musical "Jesus Christ Superstar" is set to take the stage at the Hollywood Bowl this summer, with a three-day production featuring a star-studded cast, including Adam Lambert and Cynthia Erivo. This announcement comes just a day before individual tickets for the 2025 season of La Phil-produced shows go on sale.
The Cast and Crew
Adam Lambert will join Cynthia Erivo, who was previously announced for the role of Jesus in a sex-blind casting. The selection for the role of Mary Magdalene has not yet been unveiled. The production will be staged and choreographed by Tony Award winner Sergio Trujillo and conducted by Tony and Grammy winner Stephen Oremus. The show is produced in collaboration with Neil Meron and Robert Greenblatt.
A Rock Musical Classic
"Jesus Christ Superstar" is one of the most iconic rock musicals of all time, with a guided tour of the show that put composer Andrew Lloyd Webber and lyricist Tim Rice on the music theater map forever. The musical’s rock roots will be highlighted in this production, which promises to be a fully staged version of the show, rather than a concert reproduction.
Previous Performances and Productions
Lambert is no stranger to the stage, having recently ended a six-month run in the current Broadway revival of "Cabaret". He will not be away from Hollywood for long, as he takes on the role of Judas in "Jesus Christ Superstar". The Bowl’s production follows in an annual tradition of staging a fully produced version of a famous musical with big-name performances.
Tickets and Production Details
Tickets for the production will go on sale on Tuesday at 10 a.m. PT, after package offers were previously available for several shows. With Lambert and Erivo on board, "Jesus Christ Superstar" is expected to be one of the fastest-selling shows of the season. The three-night production will take place at the Hollywood Bowl, with the exact dates to be announced.
