Red Carpet Fashion at the Harper’s Bazaar Women of the Year Awards

The red carpet at the Harper’s Bazaar Women of the Year Awards was filled with ’70s silhouettes, disco glamor, and luxe furnishings. Actress Gillian Anderson stepped out in a butter yellow Stella McCartney dress with ruffled sleeves and shoulder pads. Anderson’s red carpet appearance has long been associated with daring fashion, and this look was no exception.

A History of Daring Fashion

In 2001, Anderson wore a long-sleeved Eduardo Lucero dress to the Vanity Fair post-Oscar party, complementing the low-cut back with a fishnet thong and sunglasses. She later donated the dress to be auctioned off for charity. On the carpet, Anderson talked about the relationship between fashion and performance, and how clothes can shape a figure or sometimes contradict it.

Favorite Character Wardrobe

When asked about her favorite character wardrobe, Anderson mentioned her role as Stella Gibson in The Fall, which was known for elegant blouses and cool tailoring. However, her latest project, Trespasses, which is set in the Seventies, has warmed her up to the decade. The character’s wardrobe, which included lots of polyester, patterns, tunics, and other items she would never wear herself, has become her favorite.

A Collective Affinity for the ’70s

The evening’s looks suggested a collective affinity for the ’70s era of glamour, with fluid, casual, vibrant, and glamorous outfits. Actress and director Olivia Wilde wore a Saint Laurent velvet suit, an adaptation of the label’s famous Le Smoking tuxedo jacket, which debuted in 1966 and became a symbol of female autonomy in the late ’60s and ’70s.

More ’70s Inspirations

Other attendees, such as Erin Doherty and Chloe Kelly, also drew inspiration from the ’70s. Kelly, who won the Sportswoman of the Year award, wore a bold, sculptural, and daring dress with a plunging back and sheer crystal embroidery. She expressed her love for being able to show personality through her fashion choices, which is different from her usual athletic wear.

Evolving Personal Style

Spice Girl Mel C, who presented Kelly’s award, also talked about evolving personal style. She likes to bring a sporty touch to her outfits and has become more comfortable wearing different things and playing with more looks and styles as she got older. Celia Imrie, on the other hand, was the epitome of elegance in a black velvet dress with a boat neck and dazzling diamond cuffs.

Statement Looks

Jade stood out in a one-shoulder silk dress with a high slit, while Cheryl wore a long-sleeved lace dress with padded shoulders, silk neckline, and skirt. Former footballer and presenter Alex Scott went for a more vintage look in a 1920s-inspired Armani vest and beaded skirt. Barbie star America Ferrera wore black sequins in an asymmetrical column dress with a silk lapel blazer. Each of these looks made a statement on the red carpet, showcasing the diversity and creativity of the attendees’ fashion choices.
