Introduction to Victoria Beckham’s Netflix Series

Victoria Beckham said: "Now it’s time to tell my story" as she reflects on how her fashion business has "struggled" in the past. The former Spice Girl and designer, 51, is the subject of a new three-part Netflix series following in the footsteps of her husband’s hit series.

The Decision to Share Her Story

As to why now seemed the right time, she said: “The public has read how much my business has struggled over the years and the headlines I have had. The fact is that the business had problems, that’s why I talked about it a lot, but I’ve fixed those problems now and it took a long time. We have restructured the company and for all these reasons, now is the time to tell my story.”

The Series: Victoria Beckham

The series traces the early life and music career of the Spice Girls businesswoman and follows her as she prepares for a high-risk fashion show at Paris Fashion Week. She said: “At first I said no, but then I took some time and thought about it really long and hard. The time I was in the Spice Girls had a huge impact on me, which was only four years in my life, while I have been active in the fashion world for almost two decades.

Overcoming Prejudice

Until recently, I was aware that I was still fighting the prejudices from my previous career, always paying attention to the noise and only focusing on building the brand. I put my head down and really focused on the product, be it fashion or beauty, so that the product spoke for itself. I feel like it’s only recently that I’ve felt confident enough to talk about my time in the Spice Girls, about my family and my journey, and I feel like it’s only now that I can do that with confidence, knowing it won’t impact the brand I’ve spent two decades building.

Earning Her Place in the Industry

I have now earned my place in this industry and I have to work hard to maintain it. The other reason is that I love this industry, so if I can use my voice to highlight the incredible talent, passion, hard work and diversity of this industry, then that’s great. Lady Beckham said the process of making the series made her a “reformed control freak”.

Reflection and Growth

She said: “When I did my Masters interviews, of which there were quite a few, it was the first time I was forced to look back. Sometimes it made me smile, sometimes it was frustrating because I’m trying to remember things that I may have blocked out, there are a few triggers along the way. This was like a year-long therapy for me. I feel like I started this process calling myself a control freak and came out the other end a reformed control freak.

The Documentary

In the documentary, Lady Beckham remembers starting her fashion label and says: "When I started this fashion company 18 years ago, I didn’t know much about the industry. I was scared. I was scared because I loved fashion and it was always my dream, but I knew what people were thinking. ‘She was a pop star, she’s married to a soccer player. Who does she think she is?’"

Insights from the Fashion World

The new series includes interviews with fashion greats such as Anna Wintour, Donatella Versace and Tom Ford, who says of Lady Beckham’s move into the fashion world: "I think a lot of people didn’t take it seriously, I think a lot of people thought ‘Oh, okay, Victoria Beckham is starting a collection, someone else will probably design it, she’ll put her name on it’." David Beckham is also interviewed and talks about their company’s debt.

Conclusion

Victoria Beckham will stream on Netflix on October 9th.
