Introduction to a Historic Railway Line
The Stockton and Darlington Railway, which first ran on September 27, 1825, is approaching its 200th anniversary. To celebrate this milestone, an event weekend has been planned, including the use of replacement buses along the route of the 200-year-old railway line. This will allow for a replica of the original Locomotion No. 1 engine to make its first trip again, starting at the Locomotion Rail Museum in Shildon on Friday and Sunday in Stockton.
Changes to Railway Services
Northern, the company that runs services on parts of the historical line, has announced that some services will be replaced by buses to accommodate the anniversary celebrations. On Friday and Saturday, buses will run between Bishop Auckland and Darlington for a short time, and on Sunday, buses will run between Hartlepool and Middlesbrough. A spokesman for Northern explained that these changes were made to ensure the success of the special celebration.
Affected Services
Specific services will be affected by the changes. Three services will not take place between Darlington and Bishop Auckland on Friday and Saturday from 12:00 p.m. to 1:00 p.m., but replacement buses will be available. On Sunday, the 10:31 from Newcastle to Nunthorpe in Hartlepool will end with a replacement bus to Middlesbrough. Additionally, the 11:31 from Middlesbrough to Carlisle will start in Hartlepool with a connection bus from Middlesbrough.
Viewing the Locomotion No. 1
There are several locations where the public can view Locomotion No. 1 for free, but booking is essential for some of these locations. The event weekend promises to be an exciting celebration of the railway’s history, and many people are expected to travel to the anniversary events. Northern is working hard to ensure that all attendees can get to where they need to go, despite the changes to the schedule.
