Introduction to Ricky Hatton’s Passing

The police in Manchester confirmed the death of former boxing world champion Ricky Hatton at the age of 46. Officers stated there were no signs of foul play after Hatton was found in his house in the early morning.

Who was Ricky Hatton?

Hatton, nicknamed "The Hitman," was one of the most famous fighters in Great Britain. He became a professional in 1997 and was known for his aggressive style, which led him to several world championship titles in the light welterweight and welterweight divisions. He compiled a proud 43-0 record, with signature wins against fighters such as Kostya Tszyu and Jose Luis Castillo, before losing to Floyd Mayweather and Manny Pacquiao.

Boxing Career and Legacy

Hatton retired in 2009 but returned briefly in 2012, losing to Ukrainian fighter Vyacheslav Senchenko. Later, he became a respected coach and led Zhanat Zhakiyanov to a Bantamweight crown in 2017. He even fought an exhibition bout against Marco Antonio Barrera in July and announced plans for a professional boxing comeback in Dubai in December.

Tributes to Ricky Hatton

The Manchester-born boxer was open about his battles with depression and other mental health issues after leaving the ring. Fellow fighters noticed this openness as part of his legacy. Former heavyweight champion Tyson Fury wrote on Instagram: "Rip to the legend Ricky Hatton, he may rip. There will always be 1 Ricky Hatton." Colleague Amir Khan called him a "mentor, warrior, and one of the greatest boxers of Great Britain" and added that "sometimes the hardest struggle in silence is in mind."

Reactions from the Boxing Community

Hatton’s former promoter Frank Warren welcomed him as a "modern great" who inspired a generation of boxers and fans. Manchester City, Hatton’s beloved football club, said they were "destroyed" and promised a minute of appreciation before the derby game on Sunday with Manchester United. The organizers of the World Boxing Championships in Liverpool also promised a tribute. Hatton’s death comes only two months after his surprise comeback announcement.
