A Community Theater Reborn

A community theater in Gloucester has reopened its doors after months of renovation work, showcasing a striking new painting job. The Kings Theater, located in Kings Barton Street, is the last remaining theater in Gloucester and had to close temporarily due to security risks.

A New Lease on Life

The theater’s closure in February was a result of an audit that revealed necessary repairs. However, thanks to an enormous donation effort, the voluntary venue was able to undergo the required renovations and reopen this weekend. The facade of the theater has been reinterpreted by local mural artist Tanz Frootko, giving it a fresh and vibrant look.

The Importance of Community Theaters

Andrew Taylor, chairman of the board of directors of the theater, expressed his gratitude to everyone who contributed to the renovation effort. He emphasized the significance of community theaters, stating that they are essential for creative outlets and diversity. "The Kings Theater is a very picturesque, intimate theater and it is the last remaining theater in Gloucester. It is a hub for the community, a creative center, a center of diversity, and it is so important that we keep these creative spaces alive," he said.

A Bright and Colorful Exterior

The new exterior of the theater is sure to catch the attention of many, with its brightly painted walls. Ms. Frootko, the artist behind the mural, said, "I live my life in color – so if I can put color everywhere, I will do it. The theater was very simple and magnolia, which is a word that I don’t like to use." She added that the theater’s details made it an amazing space, and the new colors have brought it to life.

The Road Ahead

The opening show of the theater is "Electric Dreams," a trip to the world of synth music. The Kings Theater has called on the community to support them by attending their shows and bringing their friends and family. With its new look and renewed energy, the theater is ready to continue serving as a hub for creativity and diversity in Gloucester.
