Box Office Update

The holiday weekend is coming to a close, and with it, a new set of movies are making their debut. Among them are "Captured", a criminal thriller starring Austin Butler, "The Roses", a comedy featuring Benedict Cumberbatch and Olivia Colman, and a remake of "The Toxic Avenger".

New Releases

Sony Pictures’ "Captured" is expected to perform well, with a forecasted debut of $9.5 million over the four-day holiday weekend. The film, directed by Darren Aronofsky, has already earned $3.2 million on its opening day and has received positive reviews from audiences. In contrast, Searchlight Pictures’ "The Roses" is not expected to do as well, with a forecasted opening of $7 million. The comedy, which features an ensemble cast including Cumberbatch, Colman, and Andy Samberg, has earned $2.4 million on its opening day.

Classic Films Make a Comeback

Meanwhile, Universal’s re-release of "Jaws" is expected to do well, with a forecasted $9.7 million over the four-day weekend. The classic thriller, which is being re-released to commemorate its 50th anniversary, has already earned $3 million on its opening day. This is impressive, considering the film was re-released just three years ago and played in 1,246 cinemas in 2022.

Current Box Office Standings

Warner Bros.’ "Weapons" is expected to take the top spot at the box office, after being temporarily replaced by Netflix’s "KPOP Demon Hunters". The horror film has added $2.7 million to its total, bringing its domestic total to $134 million. Disney’s "Freaky Friday" is also holding strong, adding $1.7 million to its total and bringing its domestic total to $82 million.

Other Notable Releases

The remake of "The Toxic Avenger" has finally been released, after a long wait. The film, which features a cast including Peter Dinklage, Jacob Tremblay, and Elijah Wood, has earned $650,000 on its opening day and is expected to bow in the top 10. With a strong lineup of new releases and classic films, this holiday weekend is shaping up to be an exciting one at the box office.
