Introduction to ADHD

Medicinal treatment can help people who have been diagnosed with ADHD (attention deficit hyperactivity disorder) to reduce their risk of substance abuse, suicide behavior, transport accidents, and crime, according to a study. These problems are deflected with frequent ADHD symptoms such as impulsive and slightly. About 5% of children and 2.5% of adults worldwide are affected by the disorder – and growing numbers are diagnosed.

What is ADHD

ADHD means that the brain works differently for most other people. Symptoms may be difficult to concentrate and sit still, to have a high level of energy and to be impulsive. Despite the increase in people who ask for help, the disorder does not become more common. People are only diagnosed if the symptoms have at least a moderate influence on their lives.

Treatment of ADHD

The most frequently prescribed medication, which are referred to as stimulants, help with the treatment of everyday symptoms, but there were only limited indications of long-term advantages for the behavior of people, while well-published side effects such as headaches, appetite loss, and sleep disorders have triggered a debate about their safety.

Study on ADHD Treatment

A study based on 148,500 people aged six to 64 with ADHD in Sweden found that the intake of ADHD medication was associated with a reduction in initial cases:

  • Suicide behavior – 17%
  • Drug abuse – 15%
  • Transport accidents – 12%
  • Criminal behavior – 13%
During the analysis of recurring events, the researchers found that ADHD medication was associated with reductions from:
  • 15% for suicide attempts
  • 25% for substance abuse
  • 4% in accidental injuries
  • 16% for transport accidents
  • 25% for criminal behavior

Benefits of ADHD Medication

The study’s findings could be explained by medication that reduces impulsive behavior and the lack of concentration, which could reduce the risk of accidents when driving and reduce aggressive behavior, which can lead to crime. The researchers say that the study is as robust as possible, but cannot rule out that the results of factors such as genes, lifestyles, and the severity of their ADHD were influenced.

Access to ADHD Medication

Access to the right drugs for ADHD in many countries is not easy, with some drugs. In many places, waiting times can take several years to see specialists after diagnosis in order to gain access to medication. Research has shown "the diffuse advantages of ADHD diagnosis and treatment". The failure of the diagnosis and treatment of ADHD can lead to self-medication with alcohol or other drugs, poor psychological health, injuries, and detention. Too many people with non-diagnosed ADHD end up in the criminal justice system, where their condition does not diagnose and is left untreated.

Conclusion

The study increases our understanding of the potential advantages of these medications. However, it did not evaluate whether patients actually took their medication or the effects of different doses. Overall, the study provides evidence that ADHD medication can reduce the risks associated with the disorder, and highlights the importance of accessing the right treatment for those affected.
