Box Office Report

Warner Bros’ new release, Weapons, has taken the top spot in North America with an estimated $42.5 million. This marks the sixth consecutive film from the studio to open with over $40 million, a notable achievement in Hollywood. The movie, directed by Zach Cregger, follows the story of a small town where a class of school children disappears mysteriously.

Weekend Earnings

ComScore reported that the weekend earnings totaled $131 million, with the year-to-date total reaching $5.6 billion, a 7.6% increase from the same period in 2024. Weapons debuted with an A-cinema score and played at 3,202 locations, attracting an estimated 2.8 million audience members, with a male-female split of 54%-46%.

Film Performance

The horror film, starring Julia Garner and Josh Brolin, tells the story of parents in a small town dealing with the unexplained disappearance of their children. The movie also performed well in IMAX theaters, earning $410,000, which accounts for 15% of its total box office earnings. IMAX has announced that Weapons will continue to play at most North American locations next weekend.

Studio Performance

The success of Weapons contributes to Warner Bros’ winning streak, with the studio’s global box office earnings exceeding $2 billion in the three-month period ending June 30. This streak is expected to continue, with several highly anticipated releases lined up for the coming months.

Other Releases

In second place, Disney’s More Triggered Friday earned an estimated $29 million from 3,975 locations. The body-swap comedy, starring Jamie Lee Curtis and Lindsay Lohan, is expected to perform well until the end of August, with women making up 67% of the ticket holders. Meanwhile, Disney/Marvel Studios’ The Fantastic Four: First Steps took third place, earning $15.5 million in its third weekend, despite a 60% decline in earnings.

Superhero Fatigue

The Marvel Cinematic Universe (MCU) has been experiencing a phenomenon known as "superhero fatigue," with some fans feeling overwhelmed by the complexity of interconnected storylines. However, The Fantastic Four: First Steps has managed to deliver a slimmed-down action narrative, receiving strong reviews and paving the way for future MCU releases.

Other Notable Releases

Universal/Dreamworks’ The Bad Guys 2 earned $10.4 million in its second weekend, while Paramount’s The Naked Gun reboot, starring Liam Neeson and Pamela Anderson, took fifth place, earning $3.3 million. DC Studios’ Superman continues to perform well, earning $331.2 million after five weekends, and is expected to win the summer battle of the superheroes in 2025.

Indie Releases

Neon’s Sundance horror acquisition, Together, starring Alison Brie and Dave Franco, added $2.6 million to its total earnings, despite a 62% decline in its second weekend. Angel Studios’ Sketch debuted in the top 10, earning $5 million from 2,157 locations, and tells the story of a grieving single father whose daughter accepts her own lifespan.
