Introduction to TIFF Classics
The Toronto International Film Festival (TIFF) is set to take place from September 4th to September 14th, and as part of its classics program, it will be presenting a series of iconic films. This year’s selection includes the 50th-anniversary screenings of Steven Spielberg’s "Jaw" and Ramesh Sippy’s Indian action epic "Shholay".
Featured Films
The TIFF Classics program will feature a range of films from around the world, including:
- "Aniki-Bobo" (Portugal, 1942), a children’s history film by Manoel de Oliveira, which will have its North American premiere in 4K restoration.
- "Bashu, the little stranger" (Iran, 1986), a film by Bahram Beyzaie, which will also have its North American premiere in 4K restoration.
- "The bow" (Hong Kong, 1968), an early independent Hong Kong film by T’ang Shu-shuen, which will have its North American premiere in 4K restoration.
- "Nadja" (USA, 1994), a New York-set Dracula interpretation by Michael Almereyda, which will have its world premiere in 4K restoration.
Additional Screenings
Other notable films included in the program are:
- "Days and nights in the forest" (India, 1970), a film by Satyajit Ray, which will have its North American premiere in 4K restoration.
- "Jaw" (USA, 1975), which will be screened in 35mm as part of its 50th-anniversary celebration, exclusively in Canada.
- "Shholay" (India, 1975), which will have its 50th-anniversary screening and North American premiere in 4K restoration.

The TIFF Classics program is supported by Ontario Creates and the Canada Council for the Arts, and is presented by Mubi. The program is curated by Robyn Citizen, TIFF’s Director of Programming, and Senior Curator Andréa Picard. The films will be displayed in alphabetical order, ensuring a diverse and exciting lineup for attendees.
