Paramount Executive Departure

Dan Cohen, the Chief Content Licensing Officer and President of Republic Pictures, is leaving the studio as it prepares to complete its merger with Skydance. In an internal memo to employees, Cohen stated that he has been working to ensure a smooth transition as the company moves towards the expected closure of the Paramount-Skydance fusion. However, Paramount has not announced whether Cohen will be replaced in his roles.

Background and Experience

Cohen became the President of Global Television in 2017 and was known in the international TV sales business for licensing Paramount films and series to outlets worldwide. He also played a key role in revitalizing Republic Pictures, which was originally founded in 1935. Two years ago, Cohen relaunched Republic as an acquisition label, which distributed films across Paramount’s Home Entertainment, Streaming, and TV platforms.

Republic Pictures’ Recent Acquisitions

Under Cohen’s leadership, Republic Pictures has been active in acquiring independent films for US theatrical release and international sales. Some notable acquisitions include the Venice Festival entry "The Caine Mutiny Court-Martial", the Sundance title "Rob Frieden", and the 2023 Toronto festival entry "The End We Start From". The label has also acquired the Saoirse Ronan comedy thriller "Bad Apples", which is set to have its world premiere at this year’s Toronto Festival.

Future of Republic Pictures

As Cohen departs, it remains to be seen how Republic Pictures will continue to operate and what changes may occur as a result of the Paramount-Skydance merger. However, one thing is certain – Cohen’s legacy at Republic Pictures will be remembered for its significant contributions to the independent film industry. The label’s recent acquisitions and releases have showcased its commitment to bringing unique and compelling stories to audiences worldwide.
