Introduction to Art Therapy for Dementia Patients

Kath and John Griffiths have been married for 63 years, and for the past ten years, Kath has also been John’s caregiver after he was diagnosed with Alzheimer’s disease in 2015. The couple has been attending a weekly art class in Wrexham, which is specifically designed for people living with dementia and their caregivers. This class has had a profound impact on John, as it provides a calming influence and allows him to express his feelings through art.

The Benefits of Art Therapy

The art class is a dementia-friendly environment where individuals with dementia and their caregivers can come together to create art, relax, and socialize. For Kath, the class is a place where she can meet others who are going through similar experiences, share advice, and support one another. John, a former engineer, has found that the class helps him to focus and express himself creatively. The teacher, Margaret, has a unique ability to bring out the best in her students, and the couple is often surprised by what they are able to achieve.

Exhibition of Artwork

The artwork created by Kath, John, and other members of the class is currently being exhibited at Chirk Castle, a National Trust property. The exhibition showcases the talents of the individuals with dementia and their caregivers, and it has been a source of pride for everyone involved. Frank Hemmings, a dementia expert who has been associated with the art class from the start, says that the real benefit of the class is the quiet time that the individuals with dementia get to spend on their art. This time allows them to calm down, focus, and express themselves in a creative way.

The Importance of Socialization

The art class is not just about creating art; it’s also about socialization and building relationships. Mike Davies, who brings his 94-year-old mother Eileen to the class every week, says that they both enjoy it because "everyone is in the same boat." The class provides a sense of community and belonging, which is essential for individuals with dementia and their caregivers. Jan Keen, whose husband Terry attends the class, says that it has been an excellent way for him to express himself and connect with others.

The Power of Art

The art class has shown that individuals with dementia are still capable of creating beautiful and meaningful art. Terry, who started painting recognizable objects four years ago, now draws in an abstract way. His wife, Jan, says that he still enjoys the process of creating art and gets something out of it, even if he doesn’t see things in the same way as he used to. The class teacher, Margaret Roberts, says that the dementia-friendly group is "full of love" and that the joy of painting and drawing together is palpable.

Conclusion

The art class in Wrexham is a shining example of the positive impact that art therapy can have on individuals with dementia and their caregivers. By providing a safe and supportive environment, the class allows individuals to express themselves creatively, socialize with others, and build meaningful relationships. As the exhibition of their artwork at Chirk Castle demonstrates, individuals with dementia are still capable of creating beautiful and meaningful art, and this class is a testament to the power of art to bring people together and improve their quality of life.
