Introduction to Jeff Buckley Documentary

Magnolia Pictures has released the trailer for the upcoming documentary about Jeff Buckley, titled "It’s Never Over, Jeff Buckley". The documentary gives a first look at Buckley’s mortality and explores the enigmatic nature of the famous singer. The trailer begins with an interviewer asking Buckley how he wants his fans to think of him, to which he replies, "Only the music, because when I’m dead, that’s the only thing that will be there."

A Glimpse into Jeff Buckley’s Life

The trailer also shows Buckley responding to a question about his future, saying "I will not take so long". This response is met with a moment of tension, highlighting the complexity of Buckley’s personality. The documentary features archive material, combined with interviews from Buckley’s mother, Mary Guibert, his former partner, Rebecca Moore, and bandmates, as well as contemporaries like Aimee Mann. Mann can be seen in the trailer, describing Buckley as "literally the best singer I have ever heard".

The Making of the Documentary

The documentary is directed by Amy Berg, who has been wanting to make a film about Jeff Buckley since she first heard his album "Grace" in 1994. Berg has said that making this documentary has been on her bucket list since she made her first film in 2006. She describes "Grace" as an album that "changed my life forever" and "literally became the tear that hangs in my soul forever". The film debuted at Sundance in January and is scheduled to be released in cinemas on August 8th.

Critical Reception

The documentary has received positive reviews, with critic David Rooney from The Hollywood Reporter describing it as a "stirring, if somewhat diffuse tribute" to Buckley. Rooney writes that while it may not be the definitive biography of Buckley, it is a "moving homage with a lot of heart". The documentary provides a unique glimpse into the life and music of Jeff Buckley, and is a must-see for fans of the singer.
