A Tribute to Kayla
A Norfolk band has written a special song in honor of a seven-year-old girl named Kayla, who was diagnosed with cancer. The band, Sons of Mark, was friends with Kayla and wanted to create a song that would be uplifting and celebrate her life.
The Song’s Purpose
The single, titled "Kayla’s Song," will raise money for East Anglia’s Children’s Hospice, a place that supported Kayla’s family during their difficult time. Unfortunately, Kayla passed away in May 2021, before she could hear the song, due to a stage 4 neuroblastoma diagnosis.
The Band’s Inspiration
Glen Spooner, a member of the band, said, "We wanted it to be uplifting, we wanted it to celebrate Kayla’s life because she was an amazing little girl." The band’s lead singer, Owen Spooner, was contacted by Kayla’s mother, Stacey, to write a song for Kayla, and they felt honored to have the opportunity to create something special for her.
Kayla’s Story
Kayla was diagnosed with neuroblastoma at the age of three, and her family struggled with relapses for two years. Despite their efforts to raise £280,000 for treatment abroad, unfortunately, no treatment options were available. Kayla’s mother, Stacey, said, "We struggled against relapses for two years… We were then hit by a wall and unfortunately no treatment options were available."
The Importance of Support
Stacey emphasized the importance of not making cancer a "taboo topic" in childhood. She also highlighted the significance of the support they received from the hospice, saying, "They allowed me to just be a mother again and to only be present with my children." This support enabled her to have some sense of normalcy during a difficult time.
The Song’s Release
The single, "Kayla’s Song," will be featured on the band’s new album, with all proceeds going to the hospice that supported Kayla’s family. The song is a celebration of Kayla’s life, and the band hopes it will bring comfort and joy to those who listen to it. Owen Spooner said, "Obviously it’s sad, but we wanted it to celebrate too." The song is a testament to the impact Kayla had on those around her, and her memory will live on through the music.
