Introduction to Waddle-on-Sea

A unique event, Waddle-on-Sea, has taken place in Southend-on-Sea, featuring a trail of penguin sculptures along the coast. The event aims to bring joy and color to the area while raising money for Havens Hospices. Around 100 penguin figures, including super-sized and baby penguins, have been placed in the city and neighboring Leigh-on-Sea until September 3.

The Purpose of the Event

The goal of Waddle-on-Sea is to raise money for local hospice care. According to Amy Dearing, director of donation and marketing at Havens Hospices, donations have a significant impact on the charity organization. The event is a collaboration between Havens Hospices and The Wild in Art Organization, and people can participate by buying cards or downloading an app to follow the trail.

The Trail and the Sculptures

The trail features 31 oversized and 72 baby penguin sculptures installed on plinths. Local companies sponsored the large penguins, which were painted by artists. The baby penguins were decorated by local schools and community groups before the event started. The sculptures are placed in various areas throughout the city, creating a fun and interactive experience for participants.

Havens Hospices and Their Mission

Havens Hospices provides specialized care and support to people of all ages living with incurable conditions and their families. The organization relies on donations to continue their work, and events like Waddle-on-Sea play a crucial role in raising funds. Amy Dearing expressed high hopes that the event would collect as much money as possible to support families dependent on their care.

Community Involvement and Future Plans

The event has brought the community together to support hospice care. Local schools and community groups were involved in decorating the baby penguins, and people are encouraged to participate in the trail and make donations. After the event, some of the sculptures will be available for auction in September, providing an opportunity for people to own a unique piece of art while supporting a good cause. The success of Waddle-on-Sea will help secure the future of local hospice care, and the organization hopes that people will come out to support the event and enjoy the penguin sculptures.
