Celebrating 80 Years of Music

The Cheltenham Music Festival is marking a significant milestone – its 80th anniversary. This iconic event has been a staple of the community, bringing people together through the power of music. For one woman, Elizabeth Jacobs, the festival holds a special place in her heart. She first attended the event at the age of 12, in 1945, and has been a regular visitor ever since.

A Lifelong Connection

At 92 years old, Elizabeth still has the flyer from the first festival, a testament to her enduring love for the event. She recalls the experience of hearing a large orchestra sound at Cheltenham Town Hall, an experience that has stayed with her throughout her life. Elizabeth’s parents, both music lovers, introduced her to the festival, and she has been hooked ever since. She believes that the festival is "extremely important" for the community, offering a unique opportunity for people to come together and experience the beauty of music.

A Festival for All Ages

This year’s festival features a range of events, including workshops for children, a BBC concert orchestra appearance, and free events in various cafes, bars, and shops. The lineup is designed to appeal to all ages, from young children to seasoned music lovers. Elizabeth’s own collection of photographs from the festival over the years has been compiled into a book, a testament to her lifelong connection to the event.

Looking Back and Moving Forward

Jack Bazalgette, the artistic director of the festival, reflects on the event’s rich history, noting that it is "inspiring" to look back on programs from previous years and see the names of artists who have performed over the years. He believes that the festival’s success is due in part to the audience, which is "knowledgeable" and eager to explore new things. The city of Cheltenham itself is also a key factor, with its beautiful summer setting providing the perfect backdrop for a music festival.

A Bright Future Ahead

As the Cheltenham Music Festival looks to the future, Jack Bazalgette is confident that the event will continue to thrive. With its unique blend of traditional and contemporary music, the festival is sure to remain a beloved part of the community for years to come. Elizabeth Jacobs, who has seen the festival grow and evolve over the years, is equally optimistic, and she looks forward to many more years of enjoying the music and camaraderie that the festival brings. With its 80th anniversary celebration, the Cheltenham Music Festival is poised to continue its legacy as a vibrant and enduring part of the city’s cultural scene.
