Introduction to the Hollywood Sign

The Hollywood sign is an iconic symbol of the film industry, but its origins are not as glamorous as one might think. Recently, the sign celebrated its official 100th anniversary on July 13, 2023, although the exact date of its construction is still a topic of debate. This means that the sign is actually 102 years old, with a rich history that spans over a century.

The Original Purpose of the Sign

The sign was not initially intended to be a permanent fixture in the Hollywood Hills. In fact, it was designed to be a temporary advertisement for a new housing estate in the area. The sign consisted of 13 massive capital letters, each standing at an impressive 45 feet tall, spelling out "Hollywoodland" – the name of the real estate group behind the development.

Construction and Design

The construction of the sign was a significant undertaking, with a total cost of over $23,000, which is equivalent to around $430,000 or 300,000 GBP today. The structure was made of wood and sheet metal, supported by a framework of telephone masts. Despite its temporary intention, the sign was built to last, with a sturdy design that has withstood the test of time.

From Temporary to Permanent

Although the sign was only meant to stand for 18 months, it has become an enduring symbol of the film industry. Over time, the sign has undergone changes, with the "land" part of the sign being removed to leave just "Hollywood". Today, the sign is synonymous with the glamour and excitement of the movie industry, attracting tourists and fans from all over the world. Despite its humble beginnings as a temporary advertisement, the Hollywood sign has become an integral part of the city’s identity and a beloved landmark.
