Introduction to Hidden

A unique art exhibition has been launched in Norwich, aiming to encourage people to think about their personal stories. The project, named Hidden, was created by the team at St. Peter Mancroft Church in collaboration with sculptor Peter Walker. Walker designed a 6-meter luminous cube for the church, which serves as the centerpiece of the exhibition.

Community Involvement

The project involves not only the church but also various community centers, schools, and residential buildings in Norfolk. Students from local schools, including Norwich University of the Arts, Lakenham Primary School, and Norwich Steiner School, have contributed to the exhibition by creating their own art pieces. The Reverend Dr. Fiona Haworth, the project’s coordinator, emphasized the importance of community involvement, stating, "We want to say to people that this is their church – it is a place for them, and they are valued here with all the stories they bring with them."

The Concept Behind Hidden

The concept of Hidden revolves around the stories people tell and those they keep hidden. According to Dr. Haworth, "The idea behind Hidden is the concept of the stories we tell and which we hide." The vicar of the church, Reverend Canon Edward Carter, added, "Every person who comes to church has their own individual stories." The project provides an opportunity for people to reflect on their stories and share them in a safe and supportive environment.

Artistic Contributions

As part of the project, students from Norwich University of the Arts worked with members of the Matthew project to create masks that share their personal stories. These masks have the stories written inside, allowing the individuals to express their emotions and feelings without revealing their identities. Dr. Haworth explained, "It is a way to express your emotions and how you feel about how the world sees you." The masks serve as a powerful tool for self-expression and storytelling.

The Importance of Community

For both Mr. Carter and Dr. Haworth, the local community is at the heart of the project. Carter emphasized, "Like these stories, hidden stories, together with weaving… that is what makes a community, which makes us." Dr. Haworth added, "I think we want to offer this to the city as a gift. We want to tell people that this is your church, it is a place for you, and you will be valued here with all the stories you bring." The project aims to bring the community together, celebrating the diversity and individuality of its members.

A Gift to the City

The Hidden project is a unique gift to the city of Norwich, offering a space for reflection, self-expression, and community building. Through its innovative approach to storytelling and art, the project encourages people to think about their personal stories and share them with others. As Dr. Haworth stated, "We want to tell people that this is your church, it is a place for you, and you will be valued here with all the stories you bring." The project is a testament to the power of community and the importance of sharing our stories with others.
