Award-Winning Documentaries at Sheffield Docfest

The UK Documentary Festival Sheffield Docfest, which took place from June 18 to 22, has announced its award-winning documentaries. Among the winners is Grenfell: discovered, a film that follows the forensic examination of the Grenfell Tower Fire in 2017, which claimed the lives of 72 people. The film, directed by Olaide Sadiq, won the audience award.

International Competition Winners

In the international competition, Anastasiya Miroshnichenko’s Welded together took home the Grand Jury Award. The film sheds light on alcoholism in Belarus and was described by the jury as a "honest and tender representation" of a young woman’s struggle to keep her family together. A special mention was given to The petrol station companion by Karla Murthy.

Feature Jury Award Winners

The first feature jury award went to the US documentary Look Present, directed by Vickie Curtis and Doug Anderson. The film explores gender-specific violence in Guatemala. A special mention was given to the Ecuadorian documentary Carmela and the hikers by Luis Herrera and Esteban Coloma.

Tim Hetherington Award Winner

The Tim Hetherington Award was given to Sudan, remember us, a film that premiered at the Venice Film Festival last year. The documentary follows the fall of the Sudanese leader Oamr al-Bashir in 2019 and the subsequent civil war.

Festival Success

According to the festival, the 32nd edition of Sheffield Docfest saw a 20% increase in ticket sales. This is a significant achievement, indicating the growing interest in documentary films and the success of the festival in showcasing thought-provoking and impactful documentaries.
