Pixar Announces New Animated Feature Film
Pixar is currently in production on a new animated feature film called Gatto, which is set to be released in cinemas in the summer of 2027. The film follows the story of Nero, a black cat who lives in Venice, Italy, and cannot swim. The city is filled with people who are superstitious about him, and Nero is involved with the "seedier side of cat society", where he is committed to a cat boss named Rocco.
Storyline and Characters
Nero loves music and is fascinated by another outsider, a street musician named Maya. The film is directed by Italian filmmaker Enrico Casarosa, who previously directed Pixar’s Luca. According to Pixar Chief Creative Officer Pete Docter, the film aims to "capture the picturesque texture of Venice and at the same time maintain the depth and dimension that they expected from Pixar".
Upcoming Pixar Films
In addition to Gatto, Pixar has also announced several other upcoming films. Toy Story 5 is set to be released in the summer of 2026, with Tim Allen, Tom Hanks, and Joan Cusack all returning to their voice roles. The film will follow Bonnie, who is now eight years old and has received a "Lilypad" tablet device from her parents. The story will pit the original toys against the tablet for Bonnie’s attention in what Docter described as "Toy Meets Tech".
Sneak Peeks and Release Dates
Docter also showed the audience the opening of Toy Story 5, which features a box of Platinum Edition Buzz Lightyear Dolls being sent to a lonely island. The dolls come to life and combine to recreate Buzz’s legendary line from the first film, "Rendez-Vous with Star Command", before setting off on a raft to sea. The Incredibles 3 and Coco 2 are also in the works, with release dates set for 2028 and beyond. Brad Bird is writing The Incredibles 3, which will be directed by Pete’s son, while Lee Unkrich returns to direct Coco 2.
Other Disney and Pixar Projects
The first section of the Pixar presentation was dedicated to the studio’s next release, Elio, which hits theaters on June 20. Co-directors Domee Shi and Madeline Sharafian were joined by producer Mary Alice Drumm to present footage and artwork from the film. Earlier in the day, Disney presented Zootopia 2, with new footage and confirmation that Ron Clements will direct the film. Zootopia 2 is set to be released on November 26.
