Widespread Technology Failure Hits Multiple Platforms

A large number of platforms were affected by a widespread technology failure on Thursday, with tens of thousands of users reporting problems on downdetektor.com, a website that tracks outages. The issues started at around 2 p.m. and peaked at around 2:30 p.m. before most platforms began to recover.

Explanation from Cloudflare

Cloudflare, a company that provides services to several large companies affected by the outage, explained on its website that a number of its services suffered from temporary failures and were investigating the matter. According to a spokesman for the company, the source of the Google Cloud failure was a limited number of services at Cloudflare that use Google Cloud and were affected. The spokesman added that the core Cloudflare services were not impacted and that the company expected to be back up shortly.

Restoration of Services

On Thursday evening, Cloudflare services were restored and were "fully functional," according to the spokesman. Google Cloud also reported problems with its platform products on Thursday, with over 13,000 reports of outages on downdetektor.com. The company said that most of its services had been restored by 3:30 p.m. and later added that it would soon be fully functional.

Investigation and Incident Report

Google Cloud is currently investigating the service disruption and will publish a complete incident report on the cause, detailed timeline, and robust remediation steps that will be taken. The company apologized for the outage and said that it was responsible for its chosen dependencies and how it chose to architect around them.

The outage affected thousands of users, with Spotify being the most affected, with 46,000 users reporting problems on Thursday at 3 p.m. Other platforms that were affected include Discord, Google Meet, Snapchat, Google, Gmail, Google Cloud, Google Nest, DoorDash, Character Ai, YouTube, and many others.
