Introduction to the Fashion World
I apply for the first time, encouraged by friends who said, "You have to do that." Although I knew the challenges that came with it, I was hesitant due to its demanding nature. Seeing it on TV made me think, "Wow, that’s amazing," but also intimidating. I thought, what’s the worst that could happen? Nothing. I still work and do other things, so I decided to give it a try. For me, experience is key, and being with other creative people to hear advice and feedback on how to navigate the fashion world better is essential.
Challenges in the Fashion Industry
What do you think are some of the obstacles that currently shape the industry? How do you navigate the precarity of the tariffs as an independent brand? My only challenge is not having enough hours in a day to do everything, but I don’t consider it a challenge. I’m always thinking about the next step. I don’t know how to answer this question because I don’t know what is available to me or what is not available to me.
Inspiration and Creativity
If you could dress a figure from a book, a television, or film, who would it be? Tilda Swinton is my choice; she’s like a hiking game. This question allows me to think creatively and explore different inspirations.

Meruert Tolegen was founded in 2021. I’m 34 years old, from Almaty, Kazakhstan, and now based in New York, NY.
Getting into Fashion
How did you get into fashion for the first time? I always liked something creative, and at some point, I started collecting clothing. I was fascinated by how much work went into making each piece and developed a fascination for the actual craftsmanship.
Starting the Label
What made you start your label? After the birth of my daughter, I was at home and couldn’t go back to working in research laboratories. I started a children’s boutique and made a few children’s clothing pieces. Mothers then asked for matching pieces, and I used very elaborate fabrics. Over time, I thought the clothes I made were too complex, and I decided to separate them from children’s clothing. I created another website and posted on Instagram.
Career Pivot
I had a career in the sciences and worked as a researcher in a laboratory before my fashion pivot. This background has influenced my approach to fashion, bringing a unique perspective to my designs.
