New Films at the UK and Ireland Box Office

Lionsgate’s ballerina is set to lead the new films at the UK and Ireland box office this weekend, opening in 571 cinemas. The film is part of the John Wick franchise and takes place between the events of Chapter 3 – Parabellum and Chapter 4. It follows the story of ballerina assassin Eve Macarro, played by Ana de Armas, as she seeks revenge for the death of her father.

The John Wick Franchise

The John Wick franchise has proven to be highly successful for Lionsgate at the box office, with each title taking more than its predecessor. The first film, released in 2015, opened at £540,466 and ended with £1.6 million. The subsequent films have performed even better, with Chapter 2 (£2m; £6m) in 2017, Chapter 3 – Parabellum (£2.7 million; £10.4 million) in 2019, and Chapter 4 (£4.8m; £17.6m) in 2023.

Other New Releases

In addition to ballerina, several other new films are being released this weekend. Vertigo Releasing starts Sean Byrne’s thriller Dangerous Animals in 251 locations, while Bulldog Film Distribution opens Aylin Tezel’s debut feature Coordinate in nine cinemas. Dartmouth Films begins rolling out documentary film Big Star: The Story of Nick Skelton at one location, which will expand to over 70 venues by the end of July.

International Films

There are also several international films being released this weekend. Bakrania Media’s comedy-murder mystery Hausfull 5 opens in 151 locations, while Ceema Entertainment’s Arabic romantic drama Start Anew starts in two locations. Anime LTD begins And Yet: Nasty Eye, the second feature film in the Japanese And Yet franchise, in 108 cinemas.

Repertoire Titles

In addition to new releases, several repertoire titles are being re-released this weekend. Eli Craig’s horror film Clown in a Cornfield starts in 305 cinemas, while Curzon re-releases Michael Haneke’s The Piano Teacher in 13 locations. Park Circus also releases a 4K remaster of Paul Verhoeven’s 1995 film Showgirls in 74 locations.

Event Cinema

The National Theatre’s A Streetcar Named Desire is also playing in 345 cinemas this weekend, after opening on Thursday, June 5th. Other holdovers include Lilo & Stitch, Mission: Impossible – The Last Billing, Sony’s Karate Kid: Legends, and black bear’s The Salt Path.
