Acquisition of Film Rights

1-2 Special has acquired the US rights to Christian Petzold’s film, SPIEGEL No. 3, which premiered on its fourteenth day in Cannes, and plans a theatrical release. The metrograph had previously held the rights to the North American distribution, but it was assumed that the film was back on the market. The deal was negotiated by the match factory on behalf of the filmmakers.

About the Film

SPIEGEL No. 3 reunites Petzold with star Paula Beer, with whom he previously worked on Transit, Undine, and Phoenix, winner of the Grand Jury Prize. The film follows Laura, an emerging pianist, whose life is turned upside down after miraculously surviving a car accident. The cast includes Barbara Auer, Matthias Brandt, and Enno Trebs.

Production and Funding

Petzold’s film was produced by Schramm Film Koerner Weber Kaiser, with co-producers ZDF and Arte. The funding for the film came from the Filmförderungsanstalt (FFA), commissioned by the Federal Government for Culture and Media (BKM), German Film Promotion Fund (DFFF), and Medienboard Berlin-Brandenburg (MBB).

Distribution and Representation

The match factory represents the Petzold library, which includes Phoenix, Barbara, and early work such as The State I Am In. With the acquisition of the US rights to SPIEGEL No. 3, 1-2 Special plans to bring the film to theaters in the United States, making it accessible to a wider audience.
