Introduction to Affordable Museum Entry

The Thackray Museum of Medicine in Leeds has introduced a new pricing system, allowing visitors to pay what they feel is fair for entry. This move aims to make the museum more accessible and affordable for everyone.

The New Pricing System

Admission to the museum usually costs £12, but visitors can now choose to pay £9 or £10 if they prefer. Additionally, people living near the museum can purchase an annual membership for just £5, a significant reduction from the standard £20 price. For those who can afford to pay more, a "Pay it Forward" ticket option is available for £16, which helps support the museum’s work with local schools, families, and the community.

Supporting the Local Community

According to Edward Appleyard from the museum, "This is about making meaningful experiences and learning about medicine, healthcare, and well-being accessible to all." The new "Pay-IT-Forward" option will help support the museum’s important work with the local community. By making the Thackray Museum affordable for everyone, the goal is to "design a better tomorrow."

Exploring the Museum

Visitors to the museum in Harehills can learn about the history of healthcare and explore the various exhibits on display. The museum is located in a former workhouse that opened 166 years ago and later became part of St. James’ Hospital. The building is now a Grade II listed building and has won a special award at the European Museum of the Year 2023 for its work with the local East Leeds community.

Following in the Footsteps of Other Museums

The changes to the entrance fee at Thackray follow the introduction of "pay as you feel" entrance fees at other museums in Leeds, including the Leeds City Museum, Leeds Art Gallery, and Leeds Discovery Centre. Kirkstall Abbey also offers a "pay as you feel" option for Leeds residents, while visitors from outside the city are required to pay an admission fee.
