Introduction to Amrum

Kino Lorber has acquired North American rights to Fatih Akin’s coming-of-age drama Amrum, following its world premiere at Cannes. The film is based on a script by Akin and his frequent collaborator Hark Bohm, whose credits include In the Fade and Goodbye Berlin. The script is based on Bohm’s personal experiences growing up on Amrum Island.

The Storyline

The film tells the story of a young boy who is struggling to feed his family in the last days of World War II, in the spring of 1945. As the war draws to a close, the enemy is closer than the boy ever could have imagined. The film stars Laura Tonke, Diane Kruger, and newcomer Jasper Ole Billerbeck as the young boy.

Production and Cast

Amrum marks Akin’s first collaboration with Kruger since In the Fade, which won the prize for best actress at Cannes in 2017. Akin served as a producer alongside Herman Weigel. The film is a production of Bombero International and Warner Bros. Film Productions Germany, in co-production with Rialto Film, with support from several film funding organizations.

Distribution and Release

The deal for North American rights was negotiated by Karoliina Dwyer, VP of acquisitions at Kino Lorber, and Dirk Schuerhoff, CEO of Beta Cinema. The film will be released in theaters, followed by digital, educational, and home video releases. This will be the first time the film is available to a wide audience in North America, following its premiere at Cannes.

Behind the Scenes

The film’s production team included several experienced filmmakers, and the script was based on Bohm’s personal experiences growing up on Amrum Island. The film’s storyline is a powerful and emotional portrayal of a young boy’s struggles during a tumultuous time in history. With its talented cast and experienced production team, Amrum is a film that is sure to resonate with audiences.
