Introduction to the Incident
The Grammy-winning singer Chris Brown was released on bail of £5 million ($6.7 million) on Wednesday. This decision came after he was accused of hitting a music producer with a bottle in a London nightclub in 2023.
Background of the Case
A London judge granted Brown bail, allowing him to start his world tour next month. The tour had been in jeopardy after a district judge in Manchester remanded him in custody following the accusation of causing grievous bodily harm. Judge Tony Baumgartner at the Southwark Crown Court ruled that Brown could proceed with his tour, including several stops in the UK, on the condition that he pays the bail to ensure his presence in court.
Conditions of Release
Brown, who was not present in court for the hearing, was released from a prison in Salford, near Manchester, in the late afternoon. He had been arrested at a hotel the previous week. Brown is required to return to court on June 13th. If he had remained in custody, he would have missed the first two nights of his upcoming European tour.
Details of the Alleged Attack
The 36-year-old Brown is accused of an unprovoked attack on producer ABE Diaw in a bar at the Tape nightclub in London in February 2023, during his last tour. According to the prosecution, Hannah Nicholls, Brown hit Diaw several times with a bottle and then punched him in front of a club full of people in an attack captured on surveillance camera.
Co-Accused and Court Proceedings
The American musician Omololu Akinlolu, 38, who goes by the stage name "Hoody Baby" and is a friend of Brown, was also charged with the attack. Neither Brown nor Akinlolu has entered a plea. Both men are scheduled to appear in court again on June 20.
