Mubi Acquires Rights to Cannes Competition Film

Mubi has taken on Great Britain, Ireland, Latin America without Brazil, and India rights for the title Cannes competition film. The company acquired the political thriller from Kleber Mendonca Filho from sales agent MK2 films and will announce publication plans in the near future.

Film Overview

The film, set in 1977, follows a technology agent on the run who arrives during the carnival week in Recife, Brazil. However, the violence in the city disrupts his hoped-for reunion with his son. Wagner Moura leads the lineup alongside Maria Fernanda Candido, Gabriel Leon, Carlos Francisco, Alice Carvalho, and Hermila Guedes.

Production and Distribution

Emilie Lesclaux produced the film for Brazil’s Cinemascopio. Co-producers are Nathanaël Karmitz, Elisha Karmitz, and Fionnuala Jamison for MK Productions; Olivier Barbier; Leontine Petit and Erik Glijnis for Lemming Film; and Fred Burle and Sol Bondy for a Two Films. NEON bought the film for North America, while Vitrine films will release it in Brazil.

The film made its debut on Sunday, May 18th, and ranked in the last spot in Screen‘s Cannes jury network. Mubi’s Cannes slate contains several other notable films, including Joachim Trier’s Sentimental Value, Kelly Reichardt’s The Mastermind, and Lynne Ramsay’s Die, My Love.

Mubi’s Expanding Slate

In addition to The Secret Agent, Mubi has also picked up Julia Ducournau’s Alpha for Latin America and India, as well as worldwide rights for the 4K restoration of Alejandro G. Inarritu’s Amores Perros, planned with a global theatrical release. These acquisitions demonstrate Mubi’s commitment to showcasing a diverse range of films from around the world.
