Mubi’s Major Acquisition
Mubi has made its first acquisition of a competition title in Cannes this year, paying $24 million for the rights to Lynne Ramsay’s Palme d’Or contender, Die, My Love, in North America and several other areas. The film features Jennifer Lawrence and Robert Pattinson in main roles.
Distribution Rights
Mubi has also acquired distribution rights in the UK, Ireland, Latin America, Germany, Austria, Switzerland, Italy, Spain, Benelux, Turkey, India, and Australia and New Zealand. These areas will be distributed directly by Mubi.
The Film
Die, My Love is a film about a new mother struggling with postpartum depression in an isolated rural community. The film boasts a talented lineup, including Lakeith Stanfield, Nick Nolte, and Sissy Spacek. Black Label Media, Excellent Cadaver, and Sikelia Productions produced the film.
Release Plans
It is expected that Mubi will release the film in theaters for a 45-day run, marking one of the company’s largest acquisitions to date.
Negotiations
Mubi negotiated the deal with Patrick Wachsberger’s production and sales outfit, 193, and CAA Media Finance on behalf of the filmmakers. Wachsberger will continue to negotiate for the remaining areas.
Awards and Recognition
Last year, Mubi acquired the rights to Coralie Fargeat’s Cannes Competition entry, The Substance, which went on to win the Script Award and receive five Oscar nominations, including Best Actress for Demi Moore. There is already buzz on the Croisette that Jennifer Lawrence could be recognized for her role in Die, My Love come award season.
