Introduction to Capitol Music Group’s New Nashville Division

The Capitol Music Group, a subsidiary of Universal Music Group (UMG), has announced the launch of a new Nashville division. This move is part of the company’s efforts to expand its presence in the country music scene. To lead this new division, country music veteran Candice Watkins has been appointed as the President of Capitol Records Nashville and Vice President of Capitol Christian Music Group.

Leadership and Background

Watkins brings a wealth of experience to her new role, having previously worked as a senior vice president of marketing at Big Loud, a Nashville-based powerhouse. During her tenure at Big Loud, she worked with notable artists such as Morgan Wallen, Hardy, and Stephen Wilson Jr. Prior to her time at Big Loud, Watkins held roles at UMG Nashville, Red Light Management, Mozes Inc., Borman Entertainment, and Cross Point Church.

Structure and Operations

The new Nashville division will operate under the umbrella of the Capitol Music Group, with Brad O’Donnell, President of Capitol Christian Music Group, continuing to oversee the label. The current roster of artists at Capitol Nashville will remain under the Music Corporation of America (MCA), while Watkins and her team will focus on building a new squad of artists. The Motown Gospel and Tamla labels will also fall under the purview of the new division.

Goals and Expectations

According to Tom March, CEO of the Capitol Music Group, the reorganization reflects the company’s commitment to growing its Nashville operations as a core creative center for Christian, gospel, and country music. The company is eager to sign and develop the next generation of country artists, and Watkins’ expertise is expected to play a key role in this effort. March expressed enthusiasm for having a manager of Watkins’ caliber leading the company’s ambitious plans in country music, while also bringing her specialist knowledge to the gospel and Christian music operations.

Recent Developments

The launch of the new Nashville division is the latest in a series of changes to UMG’s country operations. In February, Mike Harris was appointed CEO of UMG Nashville, replacing Cindy Mabe. The company also announced the renaming of UMG Nashville to MCA in April. Additionally, the Interscope Capitol Labels Group has revived the legendary Lost Highway Records label and signed Kacey Musgraves.

Reaction and Expectations

John Janick, chairman of Interscope Capitol, praised Watkins as a "brilliant music marketing executive" with an impressive track record in developing career artists. Janick expressed confidence that Watkins will serve the company’s artists and management team well, and that her expertise will be a valuable asset to the entire Nashville operations.

Watkins’ Statement

In a statement, Watkins expressed her honor at taking on the new leadership role, citing the rich heritage of the labels and their history of working with some of the most talented artists in the industry. She looks forward to contributing to the continued success and cultural impact of the labels, and is excited to work with the team to achieve their creative and visionary goals.
