Introduction to the British Film Institute at Cannes

The British Film Institute (BFI) has presented a lineup of speakers and events at the Cannes UK Pavilion, featuring talent discussions with filmmakers Harris Dickinson and Akinola Davies JNR, as well as panel discussions on artificial intelligence, gender inclusion, and disability. Dickinson, who starred in the 2022 Palme d’Or winner "Triangle of Sadness," will discuss his new film "Urban," which is backed by the BFI and BBC.

Talent Discussions

Dickinson will be joined by director of photography Josée Deshaies and producer Archie Pearch from Devisio Pictures to discuss "Urban." Akinola Davies JNR will also give a talent discussion about his BBC film and BFI-backed debut feature "My Father’s Shadow," alongside co-writer Wale Davies, British producer Rachel Dargavel, Nigerian co-producer Funmbi Ogunbanwo, and BBC film executive Eva Yates. Additionally, Harry Lighton will give a talent discussion after the world premiere of his debut film "Passenger."

Panel Discussions

The BFI has combined with Reclaim the Frame and Women & Hollywood for a panel discussion on how to make the industry more inclusive for trans and non-binary professionals. The panel will feature author and director Amrou Al-Khadi, film director and award-winning screenwriter Chica Andrade, and Kiyoko McCrae, program director at US-based film organization Chicken & Egg Films. Another panel will explore the use of artificial intelligence in filmmaking, featuring writer, screenwriter, and film director David Defendi, AI pioneer Katharina Gellein Viken, and leader in AI-based music Rachel Lyske.

Industry Events

The BFI inclusion team is hosting an event for black women in film, celebrating black women filmmakers, and has organized a range of industry events, including a discussion on working with the UK, a panel on creativity and disability, and a talk on the rise of indigenous languages in film. The events will take place in the British pavilion and will feature a range of international speakers.

UK Pavilion 2025 Industry Events

All events will take place in the British pavilion. The schedule includes:

  • Friday, May 16: Cooperation with the UK, talent talk with Harris Dickinson, and a discussion on the art of co-producing with minority groups.
  • Saturday, May 17: Working with the UK, a discussion on creativity and disability, and a talent talk with Akinola Davies JNR.
  • Sunday, May 18: A discussion on AI routes to a desirable future, the rise of indigenous languages, and international co-productions.
  • Monday, May 19: A discussion on the charm of genre films, talent discussions with Eloise Singer and Harry Lighton, and more.

Conclusion

The British Film Institute has a lot to celebrate in Cannes, with filmmakers and creators from five festival selection films and immersive works taking part in events at the British pavilion. The BFI’s lineup of speakers and events aims to promote debate and collaboration on important industry topics, from international co-production to disability and creativity. With a range of talent discussions, panel talks, and industry events, the BFI is showcasing the best of British film and providing a platform for international collaboration and innovation.
