Introduction to the Resurrected Sculpture

A beloved dog sculpture, ‘Stalking Dog’ by Greta Berlin, has been reinstalled in its original location outside Palmers Brewery in Bridport after a successful crowdfunding campaign. The sculpture, which was part of the Bridport Art Trail, had to be removed in May due to corrosion.

The Story Behind the Sculpture

The dog, modeled after Berlin’s family pet Queenie, was a popular exhibit and its removal was met with disappointment from the community. However, thanks to the efforts of campaigners, including Art Trail curator Cleo Evans and author Ros Huxley, a crowdfunding appeal was launched to raise funds for a recast.

The Crowdfunding Campaign

The campaign was supported by the sculptor, local businesses, and the community, with the goal of raising over £6,000 to make the resin recast possible. The response was overwhelming, and the target was achieved ahead of schedule. A ceremony was held on Monday to unveil the new sculpture, attended by supporters, the mayor, and the sculptor.

The Unveiling Ceremony

The unveiling ceremony was a celebration of the community’s efforts and generosity. Writer Ros Huxley, mayor Anne Rickard, and sculptor Greta Berlin were present to unveil the new sculpture. The event marked the successful completion of the crowdfunding campaign and the return of the beloved dog sculpture to its original location.

The Role of the Community

The city council has thanked the community for their support and generosity, stating that without their efforts, the sculpture would not have been reinstated. The council also thanked Palmers Brewery for their grant funding and for offering brewery tours as part of the fundraising effort. The money raised included a fee for the sculptor, who had made her artwork available to the city free of charge.

The New Sculpture

The new sculpture, a resin recast of the original, was made possible by a specialist mold maker. The original sculpture was returned to the artist for repairs before the new version was cast. The new sculpture stands proudly over the weir in front of Palmers Brewery, a testament to the power of community spirit and creativity.
