Introduction to Tartan
As September fashion month came to a close, one major trend stood out: tartan. The punky check pattern in particular seems to be the pattern of the season, replacing summer’s polka dot trend. Last year the cozy black watch of school kilts and Highland scarves was in style, but for this autumn/winter the tartan should be cropped, oversized and bathed in neon.
The Evolution of Tartan
“Tartan is treated less as a traditional pattern and more as a statement graphic,” says celebrity stylist. “Designers are increasing the size, combining different checks together and using unexpected color combinations like bright hues or soft pastels.” Just take Daniel Lee’s recent Burberry show or the Vivienne Westwood spring/summer 2026 runway. This was also reflected in fashion week’s street style, where show attendees "putting on a plaid kilt over jeans or pairing a chic tartan blazer with sporty sneakers."
Transforming Tartan
It is true that tartan is being transformed, not revived. “Designers cut, distort, and recolor the plaid until it looks like something completely new,” says Personal Stylist. “Neon lines streaking across muted base colors, micro checks colliding with giant grids, and sheer or silky fabrics transform a wintry print into a seasonless texture.”
Styling Tartan
The way you style tartans is just as important as the print itself. “Using the pattern in a sleeve panel or lapel – or even just as a lining rather than an all-over print is more of a cool nod than a full homage,” says Sheridan-Taylor. “Accessories like punctuation are a great entry point, while tartan scarves tied in unusual ways – like headscarves or around bag handles – add little accents.” The key to the perfect punk check pattern also lies in the texture and contrast. “Tartan with leather feels edgier and cooler, while tartan with sheer fabrics or lace has a playful femininity.”
Essential Pieces
If you don’t know where to start, "Flannel check shirts are the staple for transitioning into street style," says Sheridan-Taylor. "Tied around the waist or worn open, they instantly give you that grunge ’90s cool girl vibe. The bigger and grungier, the better!" If you’re looking for something a little more grown-up, a tartan maxi skirt with a chunky knit turtleneck and casual leather boots is a great way to show off the trend.
Trendy Silhouettes
Unfortunately, the fabric can’t do all the work and the key to looking trendy often lies in the silhouette. “A classic tartan skirt feels instantly current when it has an asymmetrical silhouette or when paired with oversized shirts and sculptural jewelry,” says Kyte. Sharp lines and cropped, frayed hems also give the print a modern flair. “The pattern should be the reference, not the form,” says Sheridan Taylor.
Investment Pieces
Although it’s on trend, tartan is the print that can be timeless – if you invest in the right pieces. “When you invest now, think beyond the new,” says Sheridan-Taylor. "Fall is often the time of year when we buy that investment item. A lightweight wool plaid coat or blazer will always have longevity for many seasons to come." Investing in accessories is also a good place to start. “Accessories like an oxblood check Burberry scarf are a timeless and relatively low-cost item,” she says.
