Introduction to Kiss of the Spider Woman
Jennifer Lopez recently discussed the cultural and social importance of the upcoming film "Kiss of the Spider Woman", directed by Oscar winner Bill Condon. In an interview with CBS News’ "Sunday Morning" and correspondent Lee Cowan, Lopez shared her thoughts on the film’s significance.
The Film’s Message
Lopez stated that the film had to be remade because "in times of hate, love is the answer, and that’s what the film is really about." She also described the film as "a love letter to the Latin community and the queer community" because it features three Latin stars, including a lead from the queer community. Lopez believes that this story needs to be told again, especially during times when these communities are being marginalized.
The Power of Art
Lopez emphasized the importance of art and beauty in difficult times, saying "if the times are terrible, we turn to art and beauty, music and films to save ourselves." This sentiment is reflected in the film, which is based on the 1976 novel by Argentine author Manuel Puig and the subsequent Tony-winning musical by Terrence McNally, John Kander, and Fred Ebb.
The Film’s Plot
"Kiss of the Spider Woman" is set in 1980s Argentina, during the country’s military dictatorship. The film centers around two prison cellmates: Molina, a gay window dresser imprisoned for indecent behavior, and Valentin, a political prisoner. Molina tells stories about his favorite film actress, Aurora, to lift Valentin’s spirits.
The Cast and Release
The film features Jennifer Lopez in the title role, alongside Diego Luna and Tonatiuh. Lopez has learned to ignore expectations and focus on the joy of doing the work. She would be grateful for any recognition, but her main priority is to create something she loves. "Kiss of the Spider Woman" is set to debut in theaters on October 10th.
