Introduction to Jean Prewitt’s Legacy
Jean Prewitt will be stepping down as President and CEO of the Independent Film & Television Alliance (IFTA) at the end of 2025, marking the end of a 25-year term. The IFTA has retained the services of McCormack + Kristel to find Prewitt’s successor. Prewitt and the IFTA board have been planning this transition for several months, and she will work closely with her successor during the transition period.
Achievements and Impact
Prewitt has had a highly respected career, recently securing the return of the American Film Market (AFM) to Los Angeles after a one-time edition in Las Vegas. The move to Las Vegas was unpopular, following years of complaints about the traditional location in Santa Monica, mainly from buyers who found it too expensive and spread out. This year’s AFM will take place in Century City, a central location that is easily accessible from studios and agencies.
Overcoming Challenges
Prewitt has led IFTA and AFM through significant challenges, including the COVID-19 pandemic and the Hollywood strike. She has also worked tirelessly to ensure that the global independent sector has a strong voice and resources to thrive in a constantly evolving industry. Her efforts have focused on key issues such as copyright protection, trade barriers, tax incentives, and changes to licensing practices.
Tribute to Jean Prewitt’s Leadership
Clay Epstein, IFTA Chairman and President of Film Mode Entertainment, praised Prewitt’s vision and commitment, stating that her leadership has been instrumental in shaping IFTA and AFM into the global pillars of the industry they are today. Epstein acknowledged that it will be difficult to replace Prewitt, but the organization is looking forward to the future she has set in motion.
Reflections on a Career
Prewitt reflected on her 25-year tenure, stating that it has been a privilege to serve IFTA and the independent sector. She found it extremely rewarding to drive IFTA through recent transitions, including the return of AFM to Los Angeles in 2025 and strengthening the independent industry’s ability to adapt to change.
Background and Experience
A graduate of Harvard Economics, Prewitt also studied at the Georgetown University Law Center. She worked for an agency that advised the Bill Clinton administration on international telecommunications policy and headed the international telecommunications practice at Podesta Associates. Her diverse experience and expertise have been invaluable to IFTA and the independent film and television sector.
