New Appointments at Screen International
Nikki Baughan has been appointed as the editor of reviews, while Wendy Ide has been appointed as a senior international critic at Screen International. Baughan has written for Screen since 2014, including stints as an editor and supplementary editor. In 2022, she was appointed deputy reviews editor and worked closely with long-term reviews editor Fionnuala Halligan, who left the title in June to become director of international programs at the Red Sea International Film Festival.
Background and Experience
Before joining Screen, Baughan was a former editor of FilmScope and Film Criticism magazines and previously contributed to various print and online publications, including Sight and Sound and The List. Baughan takes on the role with immediate effect and will report to editor-in-chief Matt Müller. Ide joined Screen as a critic in 2015 and has since traveled to top festivals such as Cannes, Berlin, Venice, Toronto, Rotterdam, Tokyo, Tallinn Black Nights, and CPH: Dox.
New Roles and Responsibilities
In her capacity as a senior international critic, Ide will convey her comprehensive knowledge of international cinema and festivals to work alongside Baughan. Together, they will help shape and curate Screen’s market-leading reviews, along with American critic Tim Grierson. All three will also provide commentary throughout the year and participate in Screen’s Awards Season Podcast. Baughan expressed her pride in the work she did with Halligan and is looking forward to working with Ide, Grierson, and the team of leading international critics to ensure that Screen’s reviews remain a respected and trustworthy industry resource.
Reaction from Editor-in-Chief
Matt Müller stated that he is delighted to appoint Baughan to the decisive role of reviews editor, given her enormous experience as a writer and editor over the past decade. He is also thrilled that Ide is taking on an expanded role as a leading international critic. Müller believes that with Baughan, Ide, and Grierson working together, Screen’s reviews are in the best hands to maintain the publication’s position as an essential voice in the international film industry.
