The film is represented by Heretical and Bankside Films, which reported a boost in global sales following the Locarno premiere. Several companies have acquired rights for different regions, including Paradiso for Benelux, Praesens for Switzerland, and Warner Bros Discovery for broadcasting rights. The movie will be launched on HBO Europe and the streaming platform Max after its cinema run.
International Distribution
Other companies that have acquired rights for "The Birthday Party" include Hagi Film for Poland, Cinemart for the Czech Republic and Slovakia, Pris for Portugal, and Rosebud.21 for Greece. Arthouse Traffic has recorded the title for Ukraine, while Budapest Film will distribute it in Hungary. MCF will handle the former Yugoslavia, and the film will also be distributed in the CIS territory.
Film Overview
"The Birthday Party" is a stylish story of hedonism and heartache, with echoes of classic Agatha Christie. The movie is an adaptation of Panos Karnezis’ novel of the same name and features an international lineup, including Vic Carmen Sonne, Joe Cole, Emma Suárez, Carlos Cuevas, and Christos Stergioglou. The story takes place on a remote Mediterranean island in the 1970s and follows two charged days of secrets, ambition, and boiling family tension under the surface of an extravagant celebration.
Production and Financing
The film is a co-production of Greek, Spanish, Dutch, and British companies and was completely shot in Greece, with locations in Corfu and Athens. The movie was financed with the support of the Greek Film Center, the ICEC, the Netherlands Film Fund, and the Global Screen Fund of the BFI. Additional support came from the Hellenic Film & Audiovisual Center – Creative Greece, ERT, Kalamata Films, Eolo Film Productions, Hopeless Romance, and Front Days.
