Warner Bros Discovery Sees Rise in Income

Warner Bros Discovery (WBD) has seen a slight rise in income for the second quarter, reaching $9.8 billion. This increase is largely due to the growth of the streaming and studio segments, which rose by 9% to $2.8 billion. The strong theatrical achievements have been a significant factor in this growth.

Studio Segment Performance

In the three months, the studio segment’s turnover increased by 55% to $3.8 billion. The content revenue also saw a 16% increase, excluding foreign exchange (FX) impacts, mainly due to an excellent box office performance that generated over $2 billion worldwide. Recent film releases, such as A Minecraft film, Sinner, F1, and Final Goal: Blood Lines, have all contributed to this success, with each of the last five theatrical releases opening to over $45 million in North America.

Future Plans for the Studio

Under the leadership of Michael de Luca and Pam Abdy, the studio is planning to release 12 to 14 films per year. This includes one to two Warner Bros tentpoles, which will mainly utilize well-known IP, one or two DC Studios films, three to four New Line releases, one or two Warner Bros animation titles, and a selection of moderately budgeted original films. Upcoming releases from DC Studios include Superman, Supergirl: Woman of Tomorrow, and The Batman II.

Streaming and Financial Performance

The global streaming subscribers increased by 3.4 million compared to the first quarter. However, streaming advertising revenues fell by 10% ex-FX. Despite this, managers noted that the growth of ad-lite streaming subscribers "more than offset the decline." The company’s net income was $1.6 billion, with an adjusted EBITDA of $2 billion, which represents a 9% increase from the previous year. The growth in streaming and studio segments was partly offset by a decline in global linear networks.

Company Restructuring

Warner Bros Discovery is undergoing a significant restructuring, with the company expected to be divided into two parts by mid-2026. Zaslav will run the Streaming & Studios division as President and CEO, while Wiedenfels will take on the same titles for the Global Networks division. This move comes after the 2022 merger between WarnerMedia and Discovery, which resulted in a significant cancellation of linear TV content and a 60% drop in the company’s stock price.

Financial Outlook

The studio segment is expected to achieve at least $2.4 billion in adjusted EBITDA for the entire year, with a goal of reaching over $3 billion annually. The company reported a free cash flow of $700,000, affected by $250 million in separation-related items. Warner Bros Discovery ended the quarter with $4.9 billion in cash and $35.6 billion in gross debt, representing a 3.3-fold net leverage.
