French Box Office Sees Decline in July
The French box office experienced a significant decline in July, with 14.8 million admissions, representing a 17.3% decrease compared to the same period last year. This drop is reflected in the total admissions for the year, with 89.5 million tickets sold since January 1, a 13.6% decrease from the previous year.
US Blockbusters Dominate the Charts
US blockbusters took the top spots in July, with Jurassic World Rebirth leading the pack with 2.4 million admissions since its release on July 4th. Other popular films included F1 with 1.6 million admissions, Superhuman with over 1.2 million, and The Fantastic Four: First Steps with 673,000 admissions.
Family Films Perform Well
Family-friendly films also performed well in July, with The Smurfs attracting over a million admissions, How to Train Your Kite with 829,000, Elio with 652,000, and Lilo & Stitch with 629,000 admissions. These films were popular among audiences, contributing to the overall box office total.
French Films Struggle to Compete
French films struggled to compete with their US counterparts, with only one French film, The Piano Accident, making it into the top 10 with 336,000 admissions. A total of 60 new feature films were released in July, with 37.1% being French titles and 36% being American.
Upcoming Releases
August is expected to bring a new wave of releases, including The Evil 2, More Triggered Friday, and The Bare Weapon. Local comedies, such as No Signal! and Sentimental Value, will also be hitting theaters. Arthouse titles, including It Was Just an Accident, The Little Sister, and New Wave, are scheduled for release in the autumn.
Challenging Road to Recovery
With less than 90 million tickets sold since the beginning of the year, it may be challenging for the box office to recover and reach the 181.3 million admissions achieved in 2024. The decline in admissions is a concern for the film industry, and it remains to be seen how the box office will perform in the coming months.
