Introduction to Jesus Christ Superstar
The Hollywood Bowl’s production of Jesus Christ Superstar has just gotten a new addition to its star-studded lineup. John Stamos has joined the cast, replacing Josh Gad who had to withdraw from the first performances due to a COVID-19 diagnosis.
The New Lineup
The Andrew Lloyd Webber and Tim Rice musical features a talented lineup from Los Angeles, including Cynthia Erivo as Jesus and singer Adam Lambert as Judas. The show opened on Friday and will run until Sunday. Stamos announced the news on his Instagram, just a day after Gad had announced that he would have to step back from his role as King Herod.
Stamos’ Excitement
Stamos expressed his excitement and honor at joining the cast, saying it was a "dream" and a little crazy since he had just stepped off a plane from a tour in Spain and had less than 24 hours to prepare. He wished himself luck and asked fans to "let’s rock the bowl."
Gad’s Diagnosis and Recovery
Gad was initially planned to play King Herod but shared his COVID-19 diagnosis on Thursday, saying he would no longer be able to appear. However, by Friday, he had tested negative and attributed his recovery to Paxlovid. He confirmed on Saturday that he would return to production on Sunday, and Stamos will appear on Saturday evening.
The Musical’s History
Jesus Christ Superstar was first released as a concept album in 1970 and premiered on Broadway in 1971. Since then, it has been revived several times, featuring a range of talented casts. The current production at the Hollywood Bowl features a star-studded lineup, including Hamilton star Phillipa Soo as Mary Magdalena, Milo Manheim as Peter, and Raúl Esparza as Pontius Pilate.
Fan Reaction
Fans have been enthusiastic about the concert on social media, with many praising Erivo’s performance as Jesus as a "top theater moment." The production has been called "unforgettable" and "spectacular," with many urging others to get tickets if they can. The Hollywood Bowl has a history of producing star-studded concert versions of hit Broadway shows, including Kinky Boots, Les Misérables, and Hairspray.
