Introduction to the Sarajevo Film Festival

The 31st Sarajevo Film Festival is set to take place from August 15th to 22nd, and it’s going to be an exciting event. This year, the festival will feature a retrospective of films by the controversial director Ilya Khrzhanovskiy as part of the "Tribute to" program.

Who is Ilya Khrzhanovskiy?

Ilya Khrzhanovskiy is a Russian-born filmmaker who is also the artistic director of the Babi Yar Holocaust Memorial Center in Kyiv, the largest Holocaust research and memorial center in Eastern Europe. He is known for his immersive art projects and films, including the massive project "Dew", which consists of 700 hours of film material.

The "Dew" Project

The "Dew" project is a massive undertaking that has resulted in 14 feature films, three television series, video performances, and scientific films. Some of the notable films from this project include "Dau. Natasha" and "Dau. Degeneration", which premiered at the Berlinale 2020. "Dau. Natasha" even won a Silver Bear for outstanding artistic contribution to cinematography.

Controversy Surrounding the Project

However, the "Dew" project has not been without controversy. There have been allegations of harmful conditions for the participants, which has sparked criticism and debate. Additionally, Khrzhanovskiy has faced challenges in his personal life, including being added to a list of foreign agents by the Russian Ministry of Justice in March 2024. He has since waived his Russian citizenship.

The Sarajevo Film Festival Program

The Sarajevo Film Festival has also selected 63 participants for the 19th edition of its talent development program. The program is divided into eight laboratories, including an acting studio, Directors Summit, and Producers Summit. The mentors for the program include Croatian actor Goran Bogdan and former Israel Film Fund Head Katriel Schory.

Conclusion

The 31st Sarajevo Film Festival promises to be an exciting event, with a retrospective of Ilya Khrzhanovskiy’s films and a talent development program that will showcase the work of emerging filmmakers. With its diverse range of programs and events, the festival is sure to attract film enthusiasts from around the world.
