Introduction to Chappell Roan’s New Music
Chappell Roan has finally dropped the music video for her long-awaited single "The Subway". This release comes just a few hours after she first performed the song and over a year after she initially executed the single during her Viral Governor Ball concerts in June 2024.
The Story Behind the Song
"I am very proud of this song and what kind of trip she was," Roan wrote on Thursday on her Instagram after the song was released. "I played it at GOV Ball for the first time when I was painted as Lady Liberty Grün and played new songs live in the past to feel them." This statement gives insight into Roan’s creative process and her connection to the song.
The Music Video
The video, made in New York, was staged by Amber Grace Johnson and shot on 35-mm film. It features Roan navigating the city in body wigs and loathes, expressing her emotions over a broken heart in the subway. The video is a unique and creative visual representation of the song’s themes.
Roan’s Creative Process
"Obviously, that this really chaotic year of the performance would not know, I was not really the time to build the world. The song deserves it," wrote Roan. "But finally, we are here. I definitely tore my hair out to find out how this song should feel musically and visually and emotionally, luckily there is something to save. Thank you for getting it out for a whole year. It was worth ensuring that everything was absolutely right." This statement highlights Roan’s dedication to her craft and her desire to create something authentic and meaningful.
Recent Releases and Upcoming Performances
"The Subway" comes four months after Roan dropped her country-pop single "The Giver" in March. The fans had been waiting for "The Subway" for months after she debuted it live on Saturday evening, and she teased the song with an extensive marketing campaign that included advertising boards in cities around the USA. "The Giver" reached 5th place on the Hot 100 and marked her first number one on Billboard’s Hot Country song charts. With "The Subway", Roan will later perform a number of pop-up shows in New York, LA, and Kansas City this autumn.
