Introduction to Deion Sanders’ Health Journey
Deion "Coach Prime" Sanders, the football coach of the Colorado Buffaloes, recently unveiled his bladder cancer diagnosis for the first time on Monday morning. He appeared with his medical team, including representatives from Cu Anschutz and UCHealth, to discuss his prospects. Fortunately, he is considered "cancer-free" at this time.
The Diagnosis and Treatment
Sanders’ doctor confirmed that his bladder was removed after the cancer diagnosis, and a new bladder was created. The doctor, Janet Kukreja from the CU Cancer Center at UCHealth University of Colorado, stated, "We removed the tumor. It was very high and penetrated through the bladder wall. Not into the muscle layer, something that we call very high-risk as a non-muscle-invasive bladder cancer." Sanders underwent a laparoscopic surgery, a technique that uses a thin tube with a camera to see and work on internal organs through small cuts in the stomach.
Sanders’ Emotional Response
During the 40-minute press conference, Sanders appeared in good spirits, wearing a cowboy hat and overalls, along with his typical sunglasses. He became emotional, saying, "It was an enormous journey… God is good… God is good… you have no idea how good God was for me to be here." Sanders also mentioned that he never questioned God during this ordeal, saying, "I never said once in this journey: ‘God, why me?’"
Keeping His Diagnosis Private
Sanders revealed that nobody knew about his cancer diagnosis, not even his team. However, he assured everyone that he would continue in his position as head coach of the football team. He expressed his gratitude for the opportunity to help others, saying, "So I don’t mind the suffering that I go through, because I know the result and we help some people today."
Outlook and Future Plans
Dr. Kukreja stated that Sanders’ outlook is "very good" and that they would continue to monitor him with routine scans. She also mentioned that new bladders are being created for patients using their own intestine. Sanders is expected to return to his normal activities, including his sports show "Coach Prime’s Playbook with Romi Bean," which will air on CBS Colorado in August.
