Introduction to a New Documentary

The international sales rights for a new documentary about French writer Annie Ernaux have been acquired. The documentary, titled "Writing – Annie Ernaux with the eyes of students," is directed by experienced documentary filmmaker Claire Simon.

The Documentary’s Premiere

The documentary will have its world premiere at the upcoming Venice Film Festival in the Giornate Degli Authori section. This is a significant event, as it will showcase the film to a global audience and provide a platform for discussion about Ernaux’s work and its impact on students.

The Film’s Content

The documentary takes place in French classrooms and explores how Ernaux’s work is taught in schools. It examines the effects of her writing on teachers and students, particularly how her books inspire young people to pursue freedom and self-determination. The film is produced by Emmanuel Perreau for Rosebud Productions, in cooperation with France Télévisions and in collaboration with Michel Klein by Les Films Hatari.

The Director’s Background

Claire Simon is a prolific filmmaker, and this documentary is a follow-up to her previous works, including "Elementary," a documentary about a public primary school outside of Paris, and "Our Body," a film about patients in a gynecology department of a Parisian hospital. Simon’s films often explore themes of education, identity, and social issues.

Annie Ernaux’s Significance

Annie Ernaux is a prominent figure in contemporary feminism and was the first French woman to win the Nobel Prize for Literature in 2022. Her work has been widely acclaimed for its insightful and nuanced portrayal of women’s experiences. Judith Godeche has recently announced that she will be directing a feature film based on Ernaux’s autobiographical novel, "The Story of a Girl (Girl’s Memory)."

The Documentary’s Release

"Writing – Annie Ernaux with the eyes of students" will have a special screening at the Venice Film Festival as part of the "special event" section. The film’s sales will be handled by The Films, with CEO Pamela Leu commenting that the documentary is both urgent and timeless. The company will start sales in Venice, and the film is expected to generate significant interest among distributors and audiences alike.

Other Upcoming Films

The Films’ slate also includes Tamara Stepanyan’s "In the Country of Art," starring Camille Cottin and Tsar Amir, which will open the Locarno Film Festival on August 6th. This film is another example of the company’s commitment to showcasing innovative and thought-provoking cinema.
