The National Glass Center’s Final Exhibition

The National Glass Center in Sunderland is hosting its final exhibition, which will feature the work of former graduates from the University of Sunderland’s glass and ceramics programs. The show, called "Graduates," is expected to run from January to July 2026, before the center closes its doors due to high repair costs.

What to Expect from the Exhibition

The exhibition aims to showcase the work of people who have completed a BA (Hons), MA, or PhD program in glass and ceramics at the University of Sunderland. A selection committee will choose which works will be included in the exhibition, ensuring that only the best pieces are displayed. The committee includes renowned experts in the field, such as Reino Liefkes from the Victoria & Albert Museum, Helen Ritchie from the Fitzwilliam Museum of the University of Cambridge, and Arts Officer Julia Stephenson.

Eligibility and Application Process

Initially, the exhibition was only open to graduates from 1998 onwards. However, after receiving requests, the curators have decided to consider including works from graduates who completed their programs earlier. The application process is now open, and interested graduates can submit their work for consideration. The deadline for applications is September 14th, so graduates are encouraged to apply as soon as possible.

The Future of Glass Production in Sunderland

The closure of the National Glass Center has been met with opposition from critics, who argue that it is an important part of the city’s cultural heritage. Despite this, the University of Sunderland has announced plans to open a new location called Glassworks in Sunniside in 2028. This new center will aim to preserve the history of the city’s glass production and provide a new space for artists and enthusiasts to explore and learn about glassmaking.

Preserving the City’s Glassmaking Heritage

The new Glassworks center will be a welcome addition to the city, providing a space for people to learn about and engage with the city’s rich glassmaking heritage. While the closure of the National Glass Center is a loss, the opening of Glassworks offers a new opportunity for the city to celebrate its history and culture. The "Graduates" exhibition will be a fitting finale for the National Glass Center, showcasing the talented work of former graduates and highlighting the importance of preserving the city’s glassmaking heritage.
