Introduction to San Sebastian Film Festival
The San Sebastian Film Festival is a prestigious event that showcases the best of Spanish and international cinema. This year, the festival features a diverse lineup of films, including 17 Spanish features. Among these are films by renowned directors such as José Luis Guerin, Alberto Rodríguez, and José Mari Goenaga.
Spanish Films in Competition
The official selection includes several Spanish films in competition. One of these is "Good Valley stories" by José Luis Guerin, a documentary that explores the lives of migrants in a Barcelona suburb. Another film is "The tigers" by Alberto Rodríguez, a thriller about a sister and brother who stumble upon a hidden cocaine cache on a cargo ship. The third Spanish competition title is "Maspalome" by José Mari Goenaga and Aitor Arregi, a film about an older gay man who returns to San Sebastian to confront his past.
Other Spanish Films
In addition to the films in competition, the festival also features other Spanish films. These include "It goes in the dark" by Agustín Díaz Yanes, a film inspired by the true story of a young officer who infiltrated the Basque Terrorist group ETA. Another film is "The anatomy of a moment" by Alberto Rodríguez, a mini-series based on the book by Javier Cercas about the Spanish coup of 1981.
Special Screenings
The festival also includes special screenings of several Spanish films. These include "Flowers for Antonio" by Isaki Lacuesta and Elena Molina, a documentary about the life of a young man; "Carmele" by Asier Altuna, a period drama; and "Fate" by Paco Plaza and Pablo Guerrero, a thriller series.
New Directors
The festival also showcases the work of new directors. One of these is Irati Gorostidi Agirretxe, whose debut feature "New era" will premiere at the festival. Another new director is José Alayón, whose second feature "Dance of the living" will also be screened.
Latin Horizons
The festival’s Latin Horizons section features films from Latin America. These include "The message" by Iván Fund, an Argentine film that won the jury award in Berlin; and "The mysterious view of the Flamingo" by Diego Céspedes, a Chilean film that won the UN award in Cannes.
Other Sections
The festival also includes other sections, such as the Zabaltegi tabakalera, which features short films and documentaries. One of these is "Variations" by Lur Olaizola Lizarralde, a short film about the life of a young woman. Another section is the Pearl section, which features films that have premiered on the international circuit. One of these is "Sleepless city" by Guillermo Galoe, a Spanish-French film that won the Prix SACD in Cannes.
Made in Spain
The festival’s Made in Spain section features films that showcase the best of Spanish cinema. One of these is "April, it’s not winter today" by Mabel Lozano, a short film about the life of a young woman. Another film is "The joys of the garden" by Fernando Colomo, a documentary about the beauty of nature.
Velodroma
The festival’s Velodroma section features films that are screening out of competition. One of these is "Until I voted" by Mario Forniés and Lucas Nolla, a documentary about the life of a young man. Another film is "Unite" by Daniel Sánchez Arévalo, a drama about the lives of several characters.
